my .bashrc has a typo and I do not know how to fix it

in flag

I was trying to create an alias for a command, I added the alias to the bottom of .bashrc file but when I try to run source .bashrc I get:

.bashrc (line 6): 'case' builtin not inside of switch block
case $- in
^
from sourcing file .bashrc
source: Error while reading file “.bashrc”

Here is the block of code starting at line no. 6:

case $- in

      *) return;;
esac

Here is the whole bash file:

# ~/.bashrc: executed by bash(1) for non-login shells.
# see /usr/share/doc/bash/examples/startup-files (in the package bash-doc)
# for examples

# If not running interactively, don't do anything

What could be a possible fix for this?

hr flag
It *looks* like you are trying to source your .bashrc file into a `fish` shell instead of a `bash` shell

Ah, yes, that is it! that's a silly mistake. if you like you can answer the question and I'll mark it.

There is nothing wrong with your .bashrc file - the error is because you are trying to source it into a fish shell:

steeldriver@laptop:~$ echo $0
-bash
steeldriver@laptop:~$ source ~/.bashrc
steeldriver@laptop:~$ echo $?
0

whereas

steeldriver@laptop:~$ fish
Welcome to fish, the friendly interactive shell
steeldriver@laptop ~> source ~/.bashrc
~/.bashrc (line 6): 'case' builtin not inside of switch block
case $- in
^
from sourcing file ~/.bashrc
        called on standard input

source: Error while reading file “/home/steeldriver/.bashrc”
steeldriver@laptop ~> echo $status

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
