Ubuntu 21.10 boot problem hangs at grub

bd flag

Single OS of Ubuntu 21.10 worked fine prior to creating a second instance on usb attached HD. Now without the newly created instance plugged into the usb port my initial system no longer boots and it hangs at a grub screen giving me choices that always end up at a grub> prompt. Any idea what can be done to get back to boot directly into the single OS when no drive is attached to usb ? with the newly created instance attached I get a grub selection that does allow me to boot into the internal instance which then comes up fine.

Boot into your internal drive, reinstall grub. But all you have to do is update /EFI/ubuntu/grub.cfg's UUID, partition of internal drive. https://askubuntu.com/questions/792413/how-to-set-grub-from-second-linux-distribution-as-default-in-uefi-boot You should be able to boot external from UEFI menu, just like you boot installer. You can add a boot stanza to 40_custom to choose external, if desired. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MaintenanceFreeCustomGrub2Screen & https://askubuntu.com/questions/344125/how-to-add-a-grub2-menu-entry-for-booting-installed-ubuntu-on-a-usb-drive/344359#344359

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
