Generally no. OSes do not like being treated like temp staff. Is there something in particular that you are after? Such as ease of use or portability? There are options, but not as a bare-metal installation over USB.

I used to keep *live* systems with *persistence* for this purpose; but *live* systems are not the same as installs. I also used to keep *installed* systems on thumb-drives I'd use on various machines when away from my own; but there were many boxes where I did better with a *live* system with persistence; so the answer is YES & NO depending on hardware involved. You've tagged *drivers*; Ubuntu LTS releases offer two kernel stack choices (*and that's ignoring OEM*), so two *driver* choices are available (*drivers* are actually kernel modules; thus kernel specific & I'm ignoring proprietary)

Can you consider the option of portable virtual machine?

It is easy to create an external drive that boots both BIOS and UEFI computers using N0rbert's link. Both computers should be 64bit Intel / AMD, an ARM 64bit computer, (RPi), is not compatible with these.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
