Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Shutdown After Login

jp flag

A recent issue has started with on my Ubuntu desktop machine (Intel Nuc) in that if I reboots/shutdown the system, when it comes back up and I successfully login, the machine suddenly powers off before my desktop can be loaded.

Tried these steps: https://linuxhint.com/fix-broken-ubuntu-without-reinstalling/

I have no broken packages, nothing to upgrade or repair.

Tried switching to lightdm. This seemed to get me past the state once, but I tried a reboot and ended up back in the same spot.

Poked around in the /var/logs files, but nothing jumped out at me (not totally sure what to look for).

It's a mystery I would love to solve.

Any ideas?

A system powering off like that seems more hardware related than software. Sudden shutdowns without warning could be overheating. Make sure all your fans in your system are clean and spinning. You might need to replace the heatsink compound between the heatsink and the CPU.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
