So I have the following setup - Alienware m15 R3 with two Dell U2719DC displays (first display is feeding the other via display port/MST) attached via USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port. First of the displays (which feeds the other one and is connected to the laptop via USB-C) has two devices attached to the USB hub that is built into it - a keyboard and a mouse. What happens that at a random time (or because of a trigger?) the displays start shutting down and if I replug them they shutdown in a couple of seconds or even don't come up at all. I've noticed that the process sometimes starts when launching Android emulator (that starts severe on/off cycle), lspci
/lswh
trigger a single on/off cycle, some times at a random point. I tried to gather logs with tail -f /var/log/{messages,kernel,dmesg,syslog}
during this on/off madness. I consistently see (a lot of these):
Feb 3 20:11:27 rudolfs-Alienware-m15-R3 kernel: [ 5918.379945] pcieport 0000:00:1b.0: Intel SPT PCH root port ACS workaround enabled
Feb 3 20:11:28 rudolfs-Alienware-m15-R3 kernel: [ 5919.648785] usb usb3: root hub lost power or was reset
Feb 3 20:11:28 rudolfs-Alienware-m15-R3 kernel: [ 5919.648790] usb usb4: root hub lost power or was reset
After some of them (around 70%) I have notifications about usb devices being disconnected:
Feb 3 20:12:24 rudolfs-Alienware-m15-R3 kernel: [ 5975.820361] usb 1-11: USB disconnect, device number 10
Feb 3 20:12:24 rudolfs-Alienware-m15-R3 kernel: [ 5975.820362] usb 1-11.1: USB disconnect, device number 11
When everything comes up again it seems that yeah these devices are the usb hub in the display, the keyboard and mouse (1-11.1
and 1-11.2
respectively):

Did a lot of googling before writing this up, so relevant stuff I've seen mentioned:
- Thunderbolt security is off in BIOS
bolt
package is installed
- Nothing shows up in the Devices/Thunderbolt panel, but I assume that is fine, since none of the attached devices (2 monitors, keyboard and mouse) is actually a Thunderbolt device?
There were some mentions of thunderbolt ports going to sleep if inactive - so I cannot understand if the USB hub on the other end (in the display) is supposed to keep them alive or not?
This issue is supper annoying since I actually need to use the Android emulator, but running it makes the machine unusable. Any advices, suggestions? I can provide any other needed info.
Not sure if that is relevant to the issue, but I have and unknown device in the Ubuntu software settings (I assume it is the Killer Wireless card, even though wifi works).
Actually just noticed that there are single blocks of these errors:
