Cannot utilize full space of Ubuntu Home Partition

us flag

32 GB -- root partition. 18 GB -- home partition. 2 GB -- swap.

These are my disk partitions. I cannot use the full capacity of my home partition. I have 18 GB of usable space. I am only using about 8 GB to store my files. The disk usage utility says that I have 2.1 GB free. I am unable to use the rest of the free space. How can I change it so that I can actually use the free space?

What are you trying to use the free space for?

Could you [edit] your question to include: (0) the version of Ubuntu you’re running (1) the Terminal outputs of `sudo lsblk`, `df -I` and `df -h`. With this it may be possible to identify the problem and offer a solution

If you're running off of a USB flash drive... don't.

@heynnema: How do you justify that statement? I have been running off Full install USB flash drives for 15 years and have not had problems due to it. Running off flash drives is a great way to learn Linux.

@C.S.Cameron 1) it's slow, 2) USB flash drives are very unreliable, irrespective of your experience, 3) they're space limited, 4) when does one commit to a real install to a SSD/HDD after the learning trial?

@heynnema: I do not agree with your findings, please provide references. I think you need a little more experience with full install flash drives. Slow? Ubuntu mainly runs in RAM, Only opening or saving is slow. Unreliable? Is that your personal experiance? I do not understand "space limited", A micro SD card does not take up much space. One commits to a real install when one is ready and has tested Ubuntu on their computer. If they don't like Ubuntu they don't need to commit.

@C.S.Cameron Booting, opening, saving is slow. Space limited means that you're limited by the total size of your USB flash. A micro SD card was not the USB flash that I was referring to. After 15 years of trial on a micro SD or USB flash, it's way beyond time to commit to a real/full install onto a SSD/HDD. Be happy :-)

I am running Full install Linux on 2 laptops and 6 desktops, These are all still limited by the total size of their HDD's and SSD's. Nowadays flash drives and even Micro SD's can be over a TB, not much of a limit that I can see.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
