Blank screen after LUKS decryption prompt in Ubuntu 21.10

mq flag

My Ubuntu 21.10 system on a new Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen9 with LUKS full disk encryption boots normally until the prompt for the encryption pass. The check for the password seems fine but subsequently all I get is an unresponsive blank screen, fan running, without access to TTY. When I don't do anything, the laptop will eventually shut down, possibly due to overheating.

I can access UEFI/BIOS and everything works perfectly fine when booted in recovery mode but not using an older kernel in standard mode. However, I didn't manage to fix the freeze during normal boot. GPU is integrated Intel, no discrete graphics. Deactivating Secure Boot didn't fix the issue, neither did reinstalling ubuntu-desktop.

The system is a fresh install from a live Ubuntu USB stick on a new Laptop that erased the preinstalled Windows OS. I opted for LUKS full disk encrytion, otherwise everything else was installed using Ubuntu installer defaults. Everything worked perfectly fine out of the box for the first couple of days.

Two things happened before the issue started: First, I installed the TLP battery optimization tool and was prompted for a secure boot password. I chose the same pass as I did I during the Ubuntu install in order to get the third party drivers working. I already uninstalled the battery tool in recovery mode, which didn't fix the issue.

Second, I did a test of a live USB stick with Tails OS, which was created using Startup Disk Creator instead of Gnome Disks (which was a bad idea, apparently?). The boot failed with some kind of "serious error" message, which I don't remember precisely. Afterwards, the normal boot also failed as explained, no idea if that had anything to do with a live OS. I recreated the Tails USB using Gnome Disks, it now runs fine, as does running live Ubuntu from a USB drive.

I have access to all data, can run Ubuntu in recovery mode and could easily reinstall the system. However, this happened right after a fresh install and would be the first time I had to give up on a Linux install. So, I'm afraid this may happen again if I don't figure out the issue. Does anybody have an idea what might have caused the freeze? Of course, I can provide any kind of system data that may help.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
