Ubuntu 18.04.5 server unable to detect either SATA drive attached to Broadcom 3808 Tri-mode I/O Controller

br flag

The Ubuntu 18.04.5 Server (kernel 4.15) fails to deploy due to undetected SATA/SAS HDDs. These drives are attach to a Broadcom SAS3808 IOC. However, if drives are not attached to the SAS3808 IOC, the Ubuntu 18.04.5 Server will deploy successfully.

This symptom is evident on both installations - either thru PXE booting over MAAS or performing manual installation thru a boot media.

While, Ubuntu 18.04.5 Desktop and Ubuntu 20.04 Server in which both are using kernel 5.4, will deploy without an issue on SATA/SAS HDDs that are connected to SAS3808. In addition, other Linux OS distros (such as CentOS7, CentOS8, RHEL7, and RHEL8) have no issue detecting the HDDs via Broadcom SAS3808 as well.

Ensure you're using fully patched and supported systems, Ubuntu 18.04.6 is the *updated* 18.04 system with 18.04.5 and earlier missing some patches that can prevent them from booting on fully-patched systems. https://fridge.ubuntu.com/2021/09/17/ubuntu-18-04-6-lts-released/

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
