gnome disks error

gf flag

i want to relabel my external hard drive. Ubuntu gives it a default name 'datalocker' (because it is a datalocker DL3 - encrypted drive)

i followed these instructions to give it a new name using gnome-disks: https://www.reallinuxuser.com/how-to-simply-change-the-name-of-your-hard-drive-in-linux/

and it produced this error: enter image description here

i have little clue what it means, the man page is very brief and i searched bugzilla for "error setting label" and nothing appears: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-disk-utility/-/issues?scope=all&state=opened&search=error+setting+label

is there another way to name the external drive? my script for backing up is assuming a certain name so i want to set the name and make it fixed/consistent

Is this encrypted? Otherwise follow what it says. Boot into Windows and run chkdsk twice. It has the chkdsk needed flag set and only chkdsk can clear that. You cannot clear flag from Linux. Only use NTFS if you have Windows or at least a Windows repair flash drive.

yes, it is encrypted, does this mean gnome disks cannot be used in the way described? Re windows, i am completely allergic to it and avoid microsoft products at all costs. Are you insinuating that the disk must be repaired by clearing this flag, and this can only be done in windows? cheers

If it is Windows NTFS, yes. Unless Disks is not seeing it correctly and assumes it is NTFS. Do not know what encryption your have, if if Windows based, it will not work with Linux.

ok, i will abandon Disks. The external drive is described by the manufatcurer as: "completely cross-platform compatible and OS agnostic. With no software or special drivers required, the DL3 works with Windows, Linux, MacOS, ... any system that can utilize USB Mass Storage". I believe youre right, ie it is NTFS, but I've never had an issue using it with linux. Frankly i still have no idea whether i should be concerned about the error above or whether there is anything wrong with the drive, but it seems 100% completely fine to me, aside from gnome Disks not working

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
