Sound then Gnome locks up

cn flag

I've had problems with Gnome locking up for some time now (see Gnome not responsive)

I just noticed that just before Gnome locks up some sort of alert tone plays - a very quick bing-bing-bing (in descending freq), then keyboard and mouse locks up. I do not have screen blanking enabled in the settings menu.

Is there some other place that might be the cause?

EDIT: System is a desktop (hardware listed in the link) I've run the memtest program over night, no problems found. Just to be absolutely sure, I even changed out the memory - no effect.

I also should have said the lock up occurs after a period of inactivity... sometimes a short time (mintes) sometime longer (an hour or two)

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
