Meetings in Zoom and Teams block other access to internet in Lubuntu 20.04.4

in flag

I have been using both Microsoft Teams and Zoom for meetings and classes on a laptop running Lubuntu 20.04 since early 2021. Recently I have had an intermittent problem where I am in a meeting and try to access other online content (e.g. in a browser window) and can't. I have tried pinging another local machine using its dotted quad address, and it works perfectly; pinging, say, www.google.com nothing at all happens - eventually, if I wait long enough, I get an error saying there was a temporary dns failure; pinging 8.8.8.8 or 4.2.2.4 just gives 100% packet loss.

This happened in a Teams meeting today -- the meeting continues as normal, but nothing else online works, and as soon as the meeting is closed everything returns to normal -- ping works, browser works, etc.

Something like this also seems to be happening in Zoom, causing me to be unable to join breakout rooms without first quitting Zoom & logging out & back in again (reboot not usually needed).

Previous versions of Zoom and Teams have not caused this problem, but I update Ubuntu regularly when prompted.

OS Lubuntu 20.04.4 Kernel 5.4.0-100-generic MS Teams 1.4.00.26453 Zoom 5.9.3 (1911)

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
