Simple steps to setup existing ubuntu 20.04 LTS as server

mx flag

I have had it with WDMycloud V5. This is for home office use for farm business. I have a spare tower that I installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS desktop on a few weeks ago. I need simple steps to setup existing ubuntu 20.04 LTS as server for access by ubuntu, android and windows machines. (1) What packages do I need to install? (2) How do I setup security? (3) How do I setup access for local network access (behind my dsl router)? (I can't see it from the other machines) (4) How do I setup access from remote networks and make it secure ? I've been reading, but, my eyes are bleeding right now with a bunch of I.T. jargon and no direct help I can find to get there.

Thanks, I appreciate any help. (or directions to the info) Stan

First of all it is not IT jargon, these are terms and concepts. To answer all of your question someone should write a book of 200 to 1000 pages long, at least :) If you are familiar with some basics of the command line, such as what is file, directory, command, permissions in Linux... Then, the first you need to read is how to setup and use SSH connection, which is essential for server administration. Then setup a basic firewall, probably by UFW. At this point you will have ideas for concrete question that will fit at the Q&A format of Stack Exchange...

Such huge books are already written. If you are a beginner and really want to start with the server administration, I would recommend you to spend a moth or more to learn some basics. You could start with the free courser of [Cisco Network Academy](https://www.netacad.com/), for example *NDG Linux Unhatched* then *NDG Linux Essentials* and so on.

You've installed a desktop system I gather, so it's setup as a client and not as a server. What protocols/servers are you wanting to use as a server? eg. if it's a file-server; are you wanting NFS? SaMBa/CIFS? etc? are you wanting it as a database server? what .... etc. as these answers need to be know so you can install the required packages and begin setting them up. There are many approaches, each with *pros* & *cons* so decide what you want & build it. Currently you've got an end-goal (*want it to work*) but without any clear definition of what you want to work.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
