Screen unlocking always fails: user unknown

ee flag

I have kUbuntu 20.04LTS installed on a Dell Precision laptop.

After some update within the last three months, I am no longer able to unlock the greeter screen after it locks, either by a screen timeout or manually locking. When this occurs, my password is never accepted, and the system log shows, for example:

10/12/22 2:36 PM practical unix_chkpwd[75912] check pass; user unknown

10/12/22 2:36 PM practical unix_chkpwd[75913] check pass; user unknown

10/12/22 2:36 PM practical unix_chkpwd[75913] password check failed for user (ehildum)

10/12/22 2:36 PM practical kcheckpass[75709] pam_unix(kde:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=1000 euid=1000 tty=:0 ruser= rhost= user=ehildum

10/12/22 2:36 PM practical kcheckpass[75709] Authentication failure for ehildum (invoked by uid 1000)

When the problem occurs, I can select "Switch User" on the greeter screen and then log in successfully, but any windows/applications that were open are now closed, dumping unsaved changes.

Of possible relevance:

  • My company requires me to connect to their VPN using Cisco AnyConnect, though the problem occurs whether or not I am or have been connected during a session.
  • I have the NVidia proprietary video drivers installed (from the Ubuntu repository).

Any pointers on this would be much appreciated.

I sit in a Tesla and translated this thread with Ai:

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
