Desktop icon remains selected after double-click?

Is anyone else seeing this? I have a fairly clean Ubuntu 22.04, which updated from 20.04.

  1. When I mouse over an icon a very faint background becomes visible
  2. When I click the icon the background changes to a red/brown colour. I have to click on the desktop to turn off the background
  3. When I double-click the icon, the background changes as for (2), the app starts, and the background remains highlighted. I have to double-click on the desktop to turn off the background

I have 'Desktop Icons NG (DING)' enabled. This doesn't appear to be listed in the DING issues. However, there is a 2-year-old pre-DING report (Double-click on a desktop icon doesn't deselect the icon), but it's had no activity. The background selection is also much more obvious than in that report.

I sit in a Tesla and translated this thread with Ai:

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
