Vino showing garbled desktop view

fj flag

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu to 22.04 on an older MacBook laptop after running sevearal older versions.

Everything seems to be running fine on 22 except vino for VNC connections. That's quite annoying because vnc is the main way that I interact with this machine.

I've got vino reconfigured in the settings and can login fine through the out-of-box "Connect to Server..." vnc tool in MacOS. However, after I connect the Ubuntu desktop is garbled (screenshot attached).

It's possible to recognize some of the icons but it's totally useless for doing anything.

I also tested using the Microsoft Remote Desktop (which seems to now be the vino default in the Ubuntu settings) by connecting through a PC. Again, I can login fine but the desktop is garbled exactly the same way.

Any ideas to fix this?

This was working Ok in the earlier versions of Ubuntu (20 and 18) that I had installed.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
