How to preserve Ubuntu when reinstalling Windows 11 (Dualboot)

ms flag

Recently my windows partition broke and I am not able to boot into windows. I spoke with Lenovo techs and the only option I have is to reinstall windows 11 using a flash drive.

When this happened I was not able to get into my ubuntu system either. It would boot however as soon as I would log in it would loop back to the login page. I saw some tutorials etc and tried some things but nothing worked {I did run this command sudo chown user:user .Xauth which returned no such file or something like that}. Now when I tried booting into windows again the next day I was suddenly able to log into the ubuntu system however I do not have permission for anything. I had ROS (Robot operating system) installed and it is still installed but I cannot run it, someone told me it is because I do not have access to my /tmp folder. I do not have access to my .bashrc either, it is read only.

I was trying to back up some files and I cannot even access my external hard drive from my ubuntu system.

Now, I will be reinstalling windows soon, is it safe to simply follow the usual installation steps or are there any different steps for dual boot systems? Secondly, will my Ubuntu partition be affected by the new installation? I am hoping that with the new windows installation, the read-only problem gets resolved. Is there anything I can do to resolve the ubuntu read-only error for now?

Do you trust your valuable data to our random internet opinions of the how the Windows installer works? We are not a Windows support venue. Were I in your shoes, I would simply assume that the Windows installer ...or a user mistake... will wipe out everything, and that the Ubuntu system must be rebuilt from scratch. That means full backups of your data. That means a fresh, new, tested LiveUSB installer. Maybe you won't need those precautions. Manage your risks by preparing for the most common and most severe problems.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
