Audio from HDMI but not ports

um flag

I have single-boot jammy, all updated as of March 27 2023, on an HP refurbished desktop.

My desktop will play audio through my monitor (connected to display port through an HDMI adapter), but will not play from any of the audio ports. I've tried headphones and speakers in various applicable ports, and they show up as an option for output in the sound settings, but the only thing I hear when I select them is sometimes a click like when something turns on. The headphones and speakers both work fine with my phone.

In alsamixer, the default sound card is HDA Intel HDMI, which has 5 S/PDIF options, all with green 00 but no sound level bars (nothing happens if I use up/down arrow keys or try to type in a number).

The second default is HDA Intel PCH, which looks like this:

alsamixer menu for HDA Intel PCH Realtek ALC221. All of the options are unmuted. Master is at 100. Headphone first has a green 00 then a separate bar that is set at 91. Speaker has a green 00 and set at 70. PCM looks like it's at 100 and reads 100<>0. Line has green 00 and is set at 51. Line boo is set at 51. Line out has green 00.

I'm a novice, but that all looks like it should be working fine to me...

I previously had windows 10 installed and if I remember correctly the ports didn't work for it either, which makes me think it's a hardware issue, but I wanted to ask around in case it's not.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS defaults to using Pulse Audio (*not ALSA*) so did you explore using `pavucontrol` ? Why not be specific as to what OS/release (*rather than jammy!*) as the installation media really sets the default for sound, and you've not mentioned what *jammy* system you're using thus we can currently only *guess* as to your current setup (Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is available with many install choices & *flavors* & thus defaults vary on details you've not told us).
I sit in a Tesla and translated this thread with Ai:

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
