How do I install Koha on Ubuntu?

bd flag

Koha is a free and open source library system.

How do I install it on Ubuntu?

I've tried following the [instructions](https://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Koha_on_Debian) here, but I experience a redirection loop when I try to open the Koha website. So I thought I would create a general question on AskUbuntu.

Silly question, but are [the installation instructions from Koha](https://koha-community.org/manual/20.11/en/html/installation.html) incomplete or incorrect?

Were I in your shoes, I might consider helping the Koha community improve their documentation instead of creating a new sliver-of-a-fork here, orphaned and frozen in time. Orphaned, fragmented, unmaintained, and/or incomplete documentation is one of the top complaints of newer users of Ubuntu.

@matigo The link you shared presupposes that an administrator has already installed Koha on your web server, and now you need help following the installation wizard that is displayed in your browser. This question is about how to install Koha on Ubuntu in the first place.

@user535733 Answers on AskUbuntu can be edited, and alternative answers can be posted, so whatever is posted here won't be frozen in time. If anyone wants to contribute to Koha's documentation/wiki, I'm all for it! I'm also open to answers here on AskUbuntu.

@Flimm Seeing your high reputation I would assume you know that all details, e.g. what you tried and what problems you faced, should be written in the question. A hint at what point of the long instructions you get the problem might be helpful. The system requirements recommend "Ubuntu AMD64 last LTS release". What Ubuntu version do you use? Some parts of the instructions give you a choice, e.g. selecting a Koha release or a database, or you are supposed to edit a file "to suit the configuration that you'd like". The problem might depend on your choice or your specific settings.

I'm more interested in the general answer to the question. And I think a general question is more helpful to other users too.

This is a Koha problem, not a Ubuntu problem. This is AskUbuntu.

Found a couple YouTube walk-throughs of successful Koha installs, including on both Ubuntu 20.04 and Ubuntu 22.04, I wonder if something like that might be more useful for folks with general install questions...and save everybody a lot of typing.

I'm happy to accept a summary of those YouTube videos. Otherwise, I may post an answer myself.

I followed [the instructions on this Koha wiki page](https://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Koha_on_ubuntu_-_packages) over a lunch hour and managed to get everything installed via `apt` rather quickly. Seems that Koha could really use someone who is strongly interested in documentation and consistency

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
