Did you mean to use the tag 22.04 instead of 12.04?

Check the `~/.bashrc` file and other automatically sourced files ... Rename them and restart your terminal to see if it opens correctly.

Please say more, @ananthu-k-kumar . Is this a new install? If so, why did you use 20.04? If this is not a new install, what (might have) changed?

I agree with @Raffa: my first thought was some issue with ~/.bashrc or similar. Did that file (or other similar shell init/config files) change recently?

Is this on bare metal or in a VM?

That looks like a GNOME terminal screenshot. Try another terminal program. Hit Alt-F2 to run a command, then type xterm and hit Enter. Does that work?

To expand on @Raffa's suggestion: are there any other users on this system? Try one of them. Or create a new user, see if their terminal behaves differently. If that doesn't work, try to do anything from a console (not the GNOME terminal app, a low-level OS virtual text console)?

To try a virtual console: hit Ctrl-Alt-F4 (or another F key). Log in. Hit Ctrl-Alt-F2 or Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get back to your GUI desktop (assuming that is working). More info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key#Uses

This is not a new install, I don't know what changed but my system admin this might be due to some process that is killed but haven't exited. I tried all the alternate terminals you have recommended even before none of it is working.

Ok. If you have a sysadmin that's definitely the right place to go for help. If you want to add (a lot) more info to your original post, we may be able to help you further. Good luck!

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
