How to change color depth in Ubuntu Server?

vi flag

I was learning vim editor from ssh terminal and messing with syntax highlighting and colorschemes and noticed my console colors were way off.

I can test 256 colors in PuTTy using,

echo -e "\033[38;5;208m This is orange text\033[0m"

but only the 8 colors in console.

Are you asking about SSH or the TTY?

@muru The TTy console, TERM=linux. I don't see anyway to change it, but I can run tmux and vi inside tmux and end up with 256 colors in vim that way.

Seems you'll have to use fbterm then

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
