Finding main active program on the screen

Is it possible to see from the terminal which program has been in the past the main active window on the screen?

No. The window may no longer exist, the program may have stopped. Back when windowing systems were designed, it was deemed unnecessary, unacceptable overhead to do any sort of "accounting" on a per window basis, so there's no saved information, either.

Fair enough, but is there maybe any application that can be installed to keep track of it?

AskUbuntu is a Q&A site, not a conversation site. Questions asked (and possibly answered) in Comments are not indexed, and are of no use to other users.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
