Host of Problems with Software-Center

gb flag

The software-center no longer works. I don't know when it stopped working because I use it infrequently, but it was still working after upgrading to 23.04. Now I can't get anything out of it other than three blank tabs Explore, Installed, and Updates.

Clicking on Explore populates the screen with blank entry boxes, and nothing ever materializes in the boxes no matter how long you wait.

Clicking on Installed gives me a forever spinning gif and no results.

Clicking on Updates gives me a "Loading Updates... This could take a while" message, but it can run for hours without producing anything.

When I try to remove the app with sudo apt remove software-center it reports it can't remove it because it's not installed.

Yet, I have three entries under Settings->Apps that all take me to the same application, "Software Updater, Software & Updates, and Ubuntu Software."

Software Updater reports "Failed to download repository information."

Software & Updates appears to be a typical update configuration screen.

Ubuntu Software reports as described above with Explore, Installed, and Updates, and never provides anything from any of the three tabs.

The long and the short of it is I can't seem to install certain apps, like Vivaldi that rely on Ubuntu Software for installation.

This must be something simple, right?

Sorry for updating to the comment section.

I just wanted to say that I was able to reclaim the software-center by performing a restart following the removal procedure.

Well, almost. Under the Explore Tab selecting a category shows a screen of blank boxes, so the software-center still isn't performing correctly.

I have no idea what these hits mean.

It means to remove the `https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/mscore-ubuntu/mscore-stable/ubuntu` PPA. See https://askubuntu.com/questions/307/how-can-ppas-be-removed for how.

I used sudo add-apt-repository --remove but I'm not entirely sure I did it correctly. I guess I was trying to remove all of launchpadcontent.net. Nonetheless, I ended up removing two packages using ppa:inkscape.dev/stable & sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:mscore-ubuntu/mscore-stable.

I now get the Explore Tab back, but both the Installed Tab and the Updates Tab grind away and produce nothing. Additionally, if I try to install something from the Explore Tab I get an eternal "Loading application details..." message.

Lastly, selecting any of the categories at the bottom of the screen produces nothing but empty boxes.

Please update (edit) your question instead of commenting on your own question. It's hard to tell what you are asking now.

I thought I was keeping it in context. Sorry!

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
