Is there any reason to have an AMD GPU with Ubuntu?

in flag

As far as I can tell, AMDGPU is out of date (proprietary) and for whatever reason Ubuntu 22.04 thru Ubuntu 23.04 can't reliably even run Steam games (aka SteamOS) with my Radeon 6600 XT I just bought. They even have a 22.04 driver, but it doesn't work.

I had it working for 2 days after hacking in the Mesa PPA and some config file hacks but it died again as soon as I ran a software update.

root@Ayana-Angel:~# lspci
...
0d:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Navi 23 [Radeon RX 6600/6600 XT/6600M] (rev c1)
...

and

root@Ayana-Angel:~# lsmod | grep amd
edac_mce_amd 45056 0
gpio_amdpt 20480 0

on

root@Ayana-Angel:~# cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS \n \l

running

root@Ayana-Angel:~# uname -a
Linux Ayana-Angel 6.2.0-26-generic #26~22.04.1-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Thu Jul 13 16:27:29 UTC 2 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The free driver doesn't allow you to change the display resolution (Acer hi-res monitor OR TCL Roku TV over HDMI, and the "Pro" driver doesn't work on any release AFAIK, and I have tested around 11 clean installs in the past 2 weeks.

If you're on Steam, I recommend asking for help in the Steam for Linux discussion forum or the Linux User Group (s-lug) group. There are probably more knowledgeable people around there, and certainly some who use AMD graphics.

Thanks for the recommendation, but the AMDGPU driver doesn't load into Ubuntu. Depends issues. As there are maybe 3 major GPU vendors, it would be a pretty serious problem if a little less than half of all GPU hardware cannot be used in Ubuntu for the past 2 years without problems. While I am not suggesting Ubuntu needs to maintain or fix these drivers, I am hopeful that somebody here knows how to get them working as some level without having to roll all the way back to 20.04 LTS, but I can check that out. Thanks.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
