Inconsistent partition sizes

sl flag

I have a 1tb SSD and Windows 11 installed on it. I wanted to make a dual boot with Zorin, then I created a tiny 40gb partition for it. Some moments later, I realised 40gb wasnt enough, so I tried to expand it to nearly 200gb by reducing the size of the partition with Windows.

I did that from the Zorin OS. The resizing process was in its final steps, I guess, and I saw that the 960gb (Windows) was reduced but there was no 200gb partition there and it was asking for my password to proceed. But my OS froze and the only thing working was the mouse, but it wasnt clicking. I waited some moments and nothing happened, then I shut down my pc.

When I booted it again, there was no 200gb partition but the one with Windows was reduced. Windows with nearly 700gb, Native disk management from Windows

I tried to use the disk management from Windows to reduce the size of the partition, but it gave an error, which I dont remember exactly what it was, except it was saying something about the chkdsk command, which I already fixed.

I would like to either create the 200gb partition (I believe it is there, as the Windows partition was reduced) or back the Windows partition to as it was before I attempted to create a partition

Neither OS you mention is Ubuntu or *flavor* of Ubuntu, thus why ask here? Zorin OS is only a Ubuntu-based system. I'd perform all disk resizing from a *live* system usually (*though it'll depend on file-systems involved, if encryption & other details you didn't provide*) as many file-systems have limits when they're being used. Resizing can take time.. so I'd suggest checking (from text terminal) to check what the system was doing, the mouse moving highlights it was **not** frozen! thus linux can be commanded directly (did you tell it to cleanly shutdown using SysRq or unwisely power off?)

Changing partitions is a *dangerous* procedure, and in my opinion (*based purely on what you provided*) I see user caused issues, but you're off-topic here. When you go to a Windows or Zorin appropriate support site, you should provide full details (release details; file-systems involved etc) & be clear with details (shutdown pc was via safe method? or unsafe with power-button for example). Restoring data from backups will be fastest & safest in my opinion from the details you provided.
I sit in a Tesla and translated this thread with Ai:

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
