Changing LDAP usernames without reprovisioning user

fr flag

I'm working with my IT department and I want to verify with a community of problem solvers that this is the best way to deal with our problem.

We use LDAP and our users LDAP identifiers are their names - this is also their login for their machine. When a user needs to change their name, our current process is to create a new user, image a new computer, send them the computer (COVID) and disable the old user.

I've worked in a lot of places and I have never seen such a long process for this although admittedly, I've not been an expert on what goes on behind the scenes.

So, my questions:

  1. Is this normal?
  2. Is there something we are doing that makes this necessary? The company is all Mac based if that matters and I can share my retracted LDAP information if it's helpful.
  3. If there is a better way, can you share it?

All we're looking for here is for a user needs to change their name, that we can change their login/email/display name etc without having to ship new laptops around.

Thanks!

Sophie

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
