No Microphone in Server 2019 / RDS

gu flag

I think I have the same problem as here: No sound from microphone over Remote Desktop (Windows Server 2019) but I don't have the reputation to comment/ask on that question. I have checked all the same things in the question and the answers mentioned on that post.

The remote server just shows no recording devices available.

I have been through all the troubleshooting options I can find mentioned on the web for it it seems a lot relate to older Server OS.

I checked registry keys locally and on the remote server for fDisableAudioCapture;

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-TCP
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Terminal Services
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\Wds\rdpwd -- All are set to 0

Searched registry for fDisableAudioCapture and it appeared nowhere else.

Tried looking in Event Log > Analytical and Debug logs in Windows\TerminalServicesMediaRedirection and Windows\TerminalServices-RdpSoundDriver - they are both empty on server and client.

Checked Group Policy and with RSOP.msc that the Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Device and Resources Redirection\ allow audio recording and allow audio and video playback are both enabled.

Checked the RD Gateway settings, it's allowed in there.

I have tested on 2-3 different servers, some with RDS services installed and RDGateway setup and some with not - I can't make either work. The Remote Desktop Store App doesn't seem to support RDG so I haven't properly tested the RDS-Farm setup I have which is the ultimate goal, but it definitely didn't work on a non-RDS Win2019 server. Sounds yes - mic no.

There is no 'Audio and Video' selection in Add Features in Server 2019, just RD Session Host.

I do have Remote Desktop Connection in the Microphone Privacy settings as a "previously accessed your mic" app - I think that was from testing RDP onto another Win10 machine, to confirm it's not a client issue (yes I have selected 'Record from this computer' in the RD Client).

I think I do currently have it showing up in my RDS Farm as a recording device, but it won't see any audio from it (the meter doesn't move when I speak) and Chrome using a web-softphone to test, doesn't see the Remote mic as valid, it just says 'No Input Devices detected'.

Is there anything I've missed checking? Has anyone managed to get this working properly on Windows Server 2019?

Thanks

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
