Auto sync folders on linux server
ru flag

My problem statement is how to auto sync /home/username/script folder to /var/www/html. So whenever files under script folder are updated then it will update them in destination folder, and also chown apache:apache & chmod 755. I tried using lsyncd and this is my conf file.

settings {
    logfile    = "/var/log/lsyncd/lsyncd.log",
    statusFile = "/var/log/lsyncd/lsyncd-status.log"

UDP packet won't send if it is too small
mx flag

I am in an incredibly odd situation. Basically if I try to send UDP packets smaller than 1445 in size they never end up reaching their destination. I have a pretty ordinary router and a pretty ordinary Macos based computer.

Here is the test that I am running:

On server:

iperf -s -u -p 4445

On my mac:

iperf -c xx.xx.xx.xx -u -p 4445 --len 1445

How does a TLD domain name server work in practice?
cn flag

How exactly does a TLD name server resolve a query and identify the authoritative name server with the required information? Does a TLD name server for ".com" store the corresponding name server for every single website with the ".com" TLD? Is that not a massive database? Or is there some kind of algorithm that decides which domain names are assigned to which authoritative name servers and thus running  ...

AWS Site-to-Site VPN with Strongswan - can't ping from strongswan to AWS
ng flag

I'm trying to set up an AWS Site-to-Site VPN to Digital Ocean with strongswan.

  • I can ping from AWS to my DO instance's private IP.
  • I cannot ping from DO to AWS's private IP.

I have all inbound traffic allowed for my AWS instance, and when I run tcpdump I see that my AWS instance is receiving the ping from DO and is attempting to reply:

Personal Proxy for Postfix SMTP?
in flag

I have my own Postfix instance running on my server to send and receive letters. It is configured to reject connections from "unknown" hosts. It's okay and I would not change this to keep a minimal spam protection.

However, it makes me harder to send letters from the local machine, since I am using Windows client (TheBat) and my machine is above the router that have no hostname and has a dynamic  ...

Nginx Different Certificate Based on Client IP or Existence of X-Forwarded-For Header?
us flag

So I have Nginx Proxy Manager setup to proxy a bunch of servers. It has two certificates on it. One is the Cloudflare Origin and the other is a letsencrypt. Mostly all of my sites are internal only, thus using the letsencrypt is good. But for 2 of them I use the cloudflare proxy and thus need to use the origin certificate.

I'm trying to also allow direct access if I'm local, but currently th ...

The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
