I am currently mounting cifs shares using /etc/fstab and 'mount -a'. Here is an example of one of the mount fstab lines (minus some specfic share naming info):

Is it necessary to ban malicious IP regardless of default firewall setting being deny/reject?

I'm on Linux and using fail2ban as the ban system. So far, it has collected and banned about 150K of malicious IPs, and I'm concerned and wondering if this will gobble a fair amount of resources. As I see it on top, it has a relatively high CPU time.. My questions are,

  1. If there are more banned IP addresses, then will my CPU take more resources to filter an incoming connection? (My concern roots in ...

Reduce amount of network traffic by filtering attackers in AWS
cn flag

just installed a simple django web application in an AWS EC2 instance. The instance is always on, but currently not used by anyone (it is still in development). Recently AWS is accounting lots of money due to network traffic. When the apache2 service is on, there is a LOT of traffic on port 80, and looking at netstat looks like brute force attacks to go inside the django app.

My website will not load correctly for certain ISPs. I have verified with both the DNS provider and the website host that all information is 100% correct. However, certain internet providers yield this error message "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN". If I change my local computer's DNS settings to a public one (say cloudfare) the website will load. Benefits of hyperthreading for multiprocessing?

I'm managing a compute node in a HTC cluster. The node is a 56 cores / 112 threads dual Xeon machine, and the typical workload consists of many instances of single threaded Monte Carlo simulation jobs. Benchmarks show that the throughput scales nicely with the number of jobs up to about 56, with some non linearity due to turbo boost frequencies that are not sustained for large numbers of active jobs. The Stunning Power of Questions

Much of an executive’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few executives think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.

That’s a missed opportunity. Questioning is a uniquely powerful tool for unlocking value in organizations: It spurs learning and the exchange of ideas, it fuels innovation and performance improvement, it builds rapport and trust among team members. And it can mitigate business risk by uncovering unforeseen pitfalls and hazards.

For some people, questioning comes easily. Their natural inquisitiveness, emotional intelligence, and ability to read people put the ideal question on the tip of their tongue. But most of us don’t ask enough questions, nor do we pose our inquiries in an optimal way.

The good news is that by asking questions, we naturally improve our emotional intelligence, which in turn makes us better questioners—a virtuous cycle. In this article, we draw on insights from behavioral science research to explore how the way we frame questions and choose to answer our counterparts can influence the outcome of conversations. We offer guidance for choosing the best type, tone, sequence, and framing of questions and for deciding what and how much information to share to reap the most benefit from our interactions, not just for ourselves but for our organizations.
