Upgrading packages after fresh install renders second monitor undetectable

cn flag

Hardware: 8750H\GTX 1060 max-Q

After fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04.2.0 LTS (no internet during install), everything works fine, secondary monitor is being detected. However the moment I update packages (which involves kernel update (which involves nvidia drivers update)) monitor is not detectable anymore after reboot. I'd like to receive kernel updates, but I want my nvidia drivers to work fine too. What are my options?

I don't know your issue/video card, but you should be still able to use your system (after updates) by selecting an older kernel at grub if you're correct (ie. the issue is related to an updated kernel). I would likely do that so you can use it, likely install the GA kernel (ie. the 5.4 kernel is supported the life of the product) and see if the issue impacts that kernel (I wouldn't expect issues there).. I'd not remove the HWE stack, as you may get help here from someone with more knowledge; or you can report the issue/regression (may already be reported) & get fixed in time...

@guiverc thanks, I just don't update those packages anymore after last install and it is working just fine, however it is not ideal because I can't have kernel updates.

Ubuntu LTS offers two hardware stacks; whilst you didn't say Server or Desktop (server defaults to GA stack, desktop to HWE) I assumed desktop. I was suggesting changing the stack in use (having both installed & using the other GA stack choice). That way you get all security fixes/upgrades applied to both stacks, but you're using the other stack choice to what you installed, and not missing out on any security fixes/updates (are you'll be using them applied to the other stack choice) https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/RollingLTSEnablementStack

@guiverc got it. Is there a way to choose GA before/during installation of the Desktop ver or I can only switch after install?

Ubuntu Server installs let you select GA (default) or HWE, and for releases up to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (inc. flavors, and Lubuntu 20.04 LTS) you selected GA/HWE by the ISO used to install; eg. 18.04 & 18.04.1 defaulted to GA, 18.04.2 & later defaulted to HWE) but 20.04 for main Ubuntu defaults to HWE for installs (as it now contains OEM kernels & auto-selects which to use; flavors that don't use that OEM feature act like Lubuntu I mentioned). For Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 LTS you can change only post-install.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
