Cannot Switch User anymore (Ubuntu 20.04)

in flag

I'm experiencing a weird issue with my Ubuntu 20.04, that the system automatically log e in as root user, and I can't even switch user from the dropdown menu. When I click on Switch User from the dropdown, nothing happens. and if I logout, the system will automatically log me in as root user again.

however, if I use terminal, then I can switch to my normal user by using the command su <username>

what might cause the issue the normal user login isn't working from GUI, but only in terminal?

The last thing I did before this problem happened, is that I changed file permissions with chmod -R 777 /home as root user. can this cause the problem?

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
