USB-C audio output not working for TV

cn flag

I'm running 21.04, and have never been able to output audio to my TV, regardless of Ubuntu's version for the last three years.

I've tried using a USB-C to HDMI cable, as well as a USB-C hub that has a HDMI port, for a HDMI to HDMI connection. In both cases, I get video working just fine, but no audio. No new audio device is detected in gnome-control-centre.

I've also tried using both methods to connect my phone to the TV, and sound works just fine, so it's not a problem with the cable, hub, or TV.

What does work is if I plug in some USB-C headphones. That rules out a problem with the port, or a complete inability for Ubuntu to output sound. When plugged in, the headphones are recognised through gnome-control-centre as an audio device.

I've tried this with all default kernels for each major release of Ubuntu from the last three years, as well as the most up to date versions (including 5.13.0).

aplay -l output with the USB-C to HDMI cable plugged in:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC298 Analog [ALC298 Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

pavucontrol makes no reference to anything HDMI related. Port options are Speakers, referring to the built-in speakers, or Headphones (unplugged).

Any ideas where to go from here?

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
