Laptop doesn’t shut down

cn flag

I have Ubuntu 20.04 on a Dell XPS 13 7390

I occurred several times that the icons on the computer (both application icons and e.g. WiFi icons on the top right bar) disappear and are substituted by grey squares. I'm incapable of doing anything then: the computer won't shut down. alt + F2 works but the comand sudo poweroff -f returns input/output error.

Usually at some point the screen gets black and the messages appear:

They are not static, every few seconds one or more lines appear but always of the same kind. The only way to stop it is to keep down the power button for a few seconds.

What originates this error? How can I solve it?

I have a backup of all files so it would be fine reinstall ubuntu if necessary.

You forgot to tell us the error, so we can't tell you what it means. Please edit your question

Is your file system only mounting read only? This could be an indication of a failing hard drive.

The error(s) are in the attached foto: EXT4-fs error and a sort of a warning that the file system is read-only. How do I find out if it’s mounting read only?

You can't write to a read only file system

Fair enough. But how do I solve it? And I’m not sure it’s read only: I can save all my docs when the laptop works.

If the hard drive is failing you need to replace it

Is there a way to better diagnose it?

Can you boot from the Ubuntu installation USB and use the **Try Ubuntu** option? If so, open the **disks** app from the Live Ubuntu session and select the internal disk. Then click on the three dots on the top right and go to **SMART data & Self Tests** and see what it says for **Overall Assessment**.

I was able to boot from USB and use Try Ubuntu. However, the SMART data & Self Tests button is greyed out (apparently that's a known issue). So I performed the test with `sudo smartctl -t long /dev/... -a` and it says that the SMART overall-health self-assessment test result is 'passed'. Also the 'percentage Used' from https://askubuntu.com/a/1191538/1365185 is 0%.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
