USB headset - microphone cuts in and out?

id flag

running into an odd issue with my Jabra Pro 935 headset after switching to Kubuntu 21.04 from Windows: my Jabra headset microphone cuts in and out. It appears to work fine when I go into the Discord voice settings and will record output from my microphone. Similarly, the System Audio settings show input coming in. Then, after getting into the voice channel, the input cuts out (is it being put to sleep?) after 10-15 seconds and will not come back on until I place the headset back into the charging cradle and take it back out.

Troubleshooting I've done so far:

1.) Switching USB ports had no effect 2.) hard setting the input to the Jabra 935 or - no changes 3.) Switching from one input to another has no effect once the headset stops responding. Similarly, the System Audio Settings stop reflecting input from the microphone once it stops responding in Discord 4.) another headset works as expected - in this case a Jabra Evolve 65.

Some suggestions on further troubleshooting to narrow down the cause of the issue would be very much appreciated!

You may want to install and run PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol) to watch for device/port contention. In my own case, my Plantronics USB headset doesn't get the proper port assignment unless I manually set it (has to do with Ubuntu's recent move to pipewire).

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
