Ubuntu 18.04 loses any changes to system after shutdown

tr flag

I am not booting from a USB. The only USB plugged in I have is one for my mouse.
My system was working fine before. This Ubuntu 18.04 is the only OS I have on this laptop.

uname -a returns:

Linux user-Inspiron-5402 5.4.0-77-generic #86~18.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 18 01:23:22 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

And lsb_release -r returns:

Release: 18.04

All the applications and files I have had before this problem are still there after shutdown. But any change I make(creating, editing or deleting files; installing new applications) is lost once I shutdown/reboot my computer.

The only thing I can think of that would cause what you are describing is a read-only file system, but it should be made obvious with errors if this is the case. Please edit your question and include more specific details about what changes you are trying to make. Give us a few examples. Open a terminal and type `touch testfile`. This will create a blank file named `testfile` in the current directory. If there is a problem writing to the disk, you should get an error.

Did you happen to install the `overlayroot` or similar packages?

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
