PC only boots to ubuntu, no brand logo or BIOS/GRUB menu at start up

ph flag

My tower PC is Acer Aspire-GX781 manufactured in 2017, it runs on windows 10 for 4 years, but recently I installed Ubuntu on a different hard disk as windows (windows on 2T SSD, ubuntu on 3T HDD), and since then it is only able to boot into Ubuntu or the Ubuntu installation usb I created.

  • The bootable Ubuntu works fine
  • If I unplug the Ubuntu disk, my pc powers up, beeps once and stuck there, there is no signal to monitor.
  • On a normal ubuntu boot, there is also no “acer” logo, BIOS/GRUB/UEFI menu does not show, and no loading screen with ubuntu logo. It has 30 seconds of no signal period and Ubuntu interface just show up. I tried with ESC/F2/F8/F10/F12/Shift, all does not give me BIOS/GRUB menu.
  • I tried to take out all hard disks and usb, unplug computer power, took out the CMOS battery for 30min, logo/BIOS also no show.
  • I tried update-grub, boot repair tool from Ubuntu, they can detect windows boot manager but do not fix the problem.
  • Tried common way of editing almost all aspects in /etc/default/grub and sudo update-grub, no luck
  • Since there is no BIOS menu, I am unable to boot to Windows PE usb stick.
  • But somehow if I plug in the ubuntu installation usb I used, it auto boot to that.
  • My BIOS seems not corrupted since I can still boot and use ubuntu properly.
  • Paid to consult some computer repair guy, after hearing my description they refunded me LOL

Does anyone have same or similar experiences? Would changing a motherboard fix the problem? Please help, thanks a lot!!!

I would attack the problem by seeing if windows is listed in grub at all, and if not, figure out why. I'd boot into Ubuntu and check what the grub menu looks like. This answer shows you how to do that https://askubuntu.com/a/1019214/243321 If Windows is not listed in the grub menu, then that is the problem that needs to be investigated. If Windows is listed, but the grub menu is not being shown, then that is the problem. So, if I were you, I'd try to figure out if Windows is listed in the grub menu using the method in the linked answer.

If you ran Boot-Repair, post the link to the summary report in your question. Have you updated UEFI and SSD firmware. Many systems need that for any reasons. If pre-installed Windows, it will be UEFI. Did you install Ubuntu in UEFI boot mode? Report should show details.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
