Enabling 3D Acceleration in VirtualBox makes Xubuntu display extremely laggy

ng flag

When I enable 3D acceleration in VirtualBox, the display of the Xubuntu guest becomes extremely lethargic. Dragging a terminal window takes several seconds as it leisurely floats around retracing the mouse's trajectory.

Unchecking the 3D acceleration box fixes the issue.

Is this normal?

Computer: Lenovo T14s, i7-10610U, Hyper-V enabled in BIOS
Host: Windows 10 1809 (Managed by IT)
VirtualBox: version 6.1.26
Guest: Xubuntu 20.04. LTS (Guest Additions installed)

Thank you for your question. **Unchecking the 3D acceleration box** really fixes the performance issue.

First of all make sure that both the Extension Pack (host) and the Guest Additions (guest) are installed.

The Extension Pack provide additional support for virtual USB 2.0 (EHCI), virtual USB 3.0 (xHCI), VirtualBox Remote Desktop Protocol (VRDP), host webcam passthrough, Intel PXE boot ROM, and other experimental features. It needs a payed license for corporate usage. If the aforementioned features aren't required then you can go without. However, among the experimental and often undocumented features, we find something that improves overall performance both in 2D and 3D. Whether or not it impacts this specific user scenario remains to be tested.

The Guest Additions install specific drivers or, in case of Linux guests, more correctly "kernel modules" for better support of the virtualized hardware. In Ubuntu guests or derivatives it can be installed directly from the official repositories.

Then understand the different graphics controller options available: https://superuser.com/questions/1403123/what-are-differences-between-vboxvga-vmsvga-and-vboxsvga-in-virtualbox

Test which one provides the best performance and understand that even if given the best possible scenario, the Virtualbox 3D acceleration is still "experimental" regardless of such status being explicitly mentioned (Windows) or not (Linux).

The term "client" was used by mistake, fixed. Guest Additions is installed, we don't have a license to the Extension Pack, and it should not be required anyway

@AlexO I removed the mention accordingly and expanded the details and caveats. It is what it is.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
