Unity desktop configuration not recognized after restoring /home/user directory from backup

cn flag

Starting point

I have a new HDD in my desktop where I successfully installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with the same partition table as the old HDD, also with Ubuntu 20.04. In both situations I use the Unity interface, installed with the package ubuntu-unity-desktop.

I made a backup of the whole /home/user directory, including hidden files, in the old HDD. Then I restored that directory in the new HDD.

Issue

All goes well as far as both documents and most user settings (Firefox for example) are concerned. I can find them in the new situation.

I do login in the new desktop environment normally. However, it has not imported the older configuration settings. For example, the icons on the Launcher are fewer and larger than they were, the desktop wallpaper is not the picture I had, and so forth.

When I changed another HHD previously, all went smoothly but I cannot reproduce that any longer. I think to have followed the same procedure though.

Question

What could be the reasons why the back-up restore has Unity ignore the old configuration settings?
How can I fix it via the command line?

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
