Description: Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS
Release: 20.04
I'm running Ubuntu 20.04.3 on a cloud based virtual machine server. I seem to be unable to use any websites that involve uploading files, such as youtube / google drive / online video converters.
What "happens" is: when I click on the link that would normally open a file browser to select the file... nothing happens, accompanied by a crash/freeze of the browser (which is firefox).
I read about a similar problem involving a virtual box windows 10 installation and the solution to that was apparently to change some permissions within the OS (don't remember the specifics). I'm wondering if there's a similar setting within Ubuntu?
EDIT---
Actually Firefox doesn't freeze every time, currently it isn't freezing but still browse links fail to open a browser.
Chrome works fine, so I'm pretty sure it's a problem with firefox. Others have had the same problem in the past (looking at mozilla support forum) but none of the remedies have worked for me - i.e. safe mode, refresh...
Firefox version is 92, ubuntu is 20.04 both fresh brand new installs.
Another solution that was posited was to disable hardware acceleration... I'm not 100% sure how to do this on linux though... i did try editing the firefox.desktop file, adding Exec=env LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 firefox to the 3 instances of the EXEC command (as per some instructions i found) but not sure if I did it right.
--UPDATE
I've just noticed I somehow have two instances of Firefox... one on which the browse buttons work on websites, one on which they don't
I suspect, then, that maybe the editing of the .desktop file DID work.
Am going to re-install everything and repeat the same steps to ensure that's what's going on... then I'll hopefully be able to "answer" this question myself.
