Why does Libreoffice crash when opening documents in web view?

ro flag

When ever I try to open a document which was last viewed in "Web View" LibreOffice crashes. I am using Ubuntu 20.04 and LibreOffice 6.4.7.2. This issue has been happening for me for years and I gave up trying to use web view and stuck to normal paged view, but I thought I would try to use web view as that problem is probably going back to version 4. Yes, I could remember to returned to paged view before I close it, but I don't always remember. Yes, it happens to multiple files. I know it could be to do with the add-ons.

It then crashes trying to open any document and requires deleting the file, "registrymodifications.xcu" to get it working again.

Is there any help/solution known for this problem?

Which version of LO and Ubuntu are you using?

Unable to duplicate in LO 7.2 / Ubuntu 21.04. A test Writer document saved and closed while in Web View reopens properly.

The reason why LO crashes in web view could either be

  1. a bug in LibreOffice;
  2. an irregularity/issue in your specific document.

If you can consistently reproduce the issue, we look at 1. Then, it is worthwhile to solve an issue with the LO developpers. Perhaps, an issue has been filed already and the developpers are working on it. Mentioning your precise Ubuntu version and version of LibreOffice will be important, because issues like this may specifically depend on this.

If there is only a single document with which you see this happening, then suspect 2. That still may reflect a bug, but then dependent on a particular feature of the document. What can help, then, is to create a new document, copy the content of the old document in the new and continue using the new document. If the issue still happens, then you could delete sections of the document, a try to reproduce the bug each time. That will allow you to determine what section of the document may cause the problem. It may not be easy, though, to pinpoint the specific issue in that section.

If you depend critically on web view, and you are not in the ability or do not wish to use a different version - either installed from the LO PPA, or using snap, then you will need to remember to return to normal view when closing the document. To quickly resolve the issue if you forget that, you could bind the command that deletes the registrymodifications.xcufile to a shortcut key for quick recovery.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
