Application Audio Doesn't Seem to Work When Also Using Microphone

kr flag

I am using Ubuntu 20.04 running Kernel 5.11.0.36.40. The audio is behaving very strangely and I'm not sure how to fix it. It seems to happen only when I'm using applications that use both the microphone and the speaker. For example, when I use Spotify, everything is fine. Or even if I use Youtube within my browser--everything is fine.

But, when I use Zoom, Discord, or Google Meet (within the same browser), other people can hear me but I can't hear them. When I load Google Meet, I can test the speaker before turning the mic on and it seems okay. But once I join a meeting, there's nothing.

Now the weirdest part: when I open pavucontrol, I see the volume bars moving up and down for the output from these applications. Still, I can't hear anything. Then, if I click the lock icon to unlock the two tracks and drag one of them up or down, I can suddenly hear the audio. But, as soon as I stop dragging the track's volume, it goes back to silence.

This seems like it might be a PulseAudio bug--I am using 13.99.1. I'd appreciate any help in figuring this out!

Thanks!

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
