LUKS after or before LVM

za flag

Difference in approaches if i first do LVM, pvcreate - vgcreate - lvcreate, and after cryptosetup luksFormat - open, or i'll do it in reverse order (format - open and do LVM). LVM on LUKs or LUKS on LVM, what's better?

If you can use the whole drive, then I suggest that you make a fresh installation and let the installer do the job automatically.

Another disk, 1 for OS, 1 for Data. Use LUKS for Data disk.

Do you want the operating system encrypted? If so, do it during system installation. If you only want to encrypt a disk that is wholly separate from your operating system, it doesn't matter.

@Nmath, I look to the future. What to do if there is not enough free space? Or add one more disk. How about scalability, flexibility. Do not destroy what has been done, but simply add.

I'm not sure what you're asking. What does your question have to do with free space?

@Nmath, A question of flexibility and scalability

It doesn't make sense to me what you are asking. I can't think of anything except the obvious answer. You only have as much space as available on the drive. If you run out, you either need to delete things to make space or buy another hard drive. Whether or not you format the volume or encrypt it really has nothing to do with that. Are you confused about what encryption does or what LVM is? If so, please do some additional research and ask another question if you are still lost. Be sure to share your research and what exactly you aren't clear about. See: https://askubuntu.com/q/3596

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
