Uefi boot problems

pe flag

OK. I like to install linux distro on separate usb HDD disk and set the bios to boot from that. Now if I install ubuntu, the entry ubuntu will appear in the bios so that can be selected and booted from BUT two problems. If you delete that entry in the bios, even though usb disk unplugged (ie you've deleted NOTHING from the disk itself) you won't be able to boot from that disk again. Your installation is lost! Second problem. Let's say you've installed ubuntu again. If you now install a derivative of ubuntu (kbuntu etc) the entry 'ubuntu' will be written to the bios, overwriting the original entry and again your ability to boot from the disk containing ubuntu itself will be lost. In short, the fact that you can lose your installation so easily is not very satisfactory. If anyone who is clued up in these boot matters can advise, that would be good.

You don't "lose your installation". You can always restore grub settings and UEFI entries.

@Pilot6 'You can always restore grub settings and UEFI entries' How do you go about doing that?

Do you have an ESP on USB external drive? Its required. http://askubuntu.com/questions/743095/how-to-prepare-a-disk-on-an-efi-based-pc-for-ubuntu You can change fstab to use external drive's ESP and totally reinstall grub. You can also copy /EFI/Boot & /EFI/ubuntu folders (both required) from internal drive's ESP to external drive. External drive will boot directly from UEFI using hard drive entry, just like you selected when booting live installer. See `man efibootmgr` to edit and change boot order. http://askubuntu.com/questions/743095/how-to-prepare-a-disk-on-an-efi-based-pc-for-ubuntu

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
