Deep Learning using ROCm on a MacBook

ma flag

I have a Macbook Pro (Intel) with a 4GB AMD GPU. I wish to train Deep Learning Models on my local machine, but it has been inefficient.

I recently found out about ROCm that allows us to use Tensorflow and Pytorch on an AMD GPU. If someone has tried this please let me about your experience and performance improvements.

Implementing ROCm would require me to switch to Ubuntu. I would like to know the best way to do this without losing macOS. I use Ubuntu and macOS, and I prefer to continue using macOS as my main operating system. The last time when I had dual boot Ubuntu on a Windows machine, I had some GRUB Boot Loader issues when I decided to remove Ubuntu due to memory constraints. I would appreciate it if you could let me know the best way to do this for a MacBook. I was also considering options of Ubuntu on an SSD USB stick, but I am not aware of the performance improvements. I also don't know how memory and processing happen in this case and would appreciate it if someone could tell me more about it too.

Please share if you know any other method to solve the issue.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
