Wine msiexec.exe encounter serious error

cn flag

recently I had make the changes from Windows to Linux, and since then I have learnt new things everyday from making fine adjustment to my liking and troubleshooting some of the problem encountered.

However I had encounter a problem when I tried to install Microsoft Office 2010 with wine 6.0.1, and I encountered the mentioned problem "msiexec.exe encounter serious error"

I had tried using a couple of tutorial and to no avail and all resulted in the same error. Had tried to install with default prefix, tried create wineprefix with winearch=win32, had done the winetricks to add msxml6 to the library, tried updated the mono and gecko to the latest version available, non are working.

below are the error message that I had encountered, appreciate anyone can give me the pointer or solution to this problem. Thanks.

    Unhandled exception: C++ exception(object = 0x014fdb40, type = 0x1004d798) in 32-bit code (0x7b00fd36).

@MadMike Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately that did not answer my question. As I had used the same method once but not working.

I consider this the wrong place to ask. Memory issuses in WINE seems more something for wineHQ https://forum.winehq.org/
cn flag
Hi @Rinzwind, So this was the memory issues rather than the installation process that has went wrong?
cn flag
Well it could be that that lead to it :) See for instance this old one https://askubuntu.com/questions/312820/error-installing-ms-office-in-ubuntu-13-04
in flag
You say you tried the same method. Did you also try POL (Playonlinux)?. You mention all the other tools POL is by far the easiest. If you tried POL you should go into detail what you tried and what exactly didn't work.

Does this answer your question? [Can I install Microsoft Office? If so, how?](https://askubuntu.com/questions/156296/can-i-install-microsoft-office-if-so-how). Install PlayOnLinux and use its wizard to install MS Office. It is proven reproducible method.
cn flag
@MadMike Hi, sorry for not stating it clearly, I did not use the POL for the installation, but was using WineHQ with the same library as mentioned, the different with the mentioned method was the wine version. Rather than the wine version 3.0 or 3.8 but I was using wine version 6.0.1. However just now I give POL wizard a tried, and it will install the Office 2010. However knowing that POL will work and not the winehq itself make me want to know what is going on and what has been done wrong on my part.
cn flag
@N0rbert, yes POL will install without problem. But I wish to drill down on what has went wrong with non POL method.
cn flag
Thanks for the assistance provided by everyone involved. POL method will install the Office 2010 successfully. However I wish to understand the reason why the non POL method failed with version 6.0.1. And I will post the question to WineHQ forum for further discussion. Thanks for everyone's help.

I can totally relate to that feeling of wanting to be in control and of why stuff-works-now and also why-stuff-didn't-work-before. What is upping the diffuclty here is previous steps can have effects on the latest tries and helping other people will need a broad understanding around the domain to know what needs to be checked. You will need to document both installtions where cleanly so other can help working out why one thing worked and the other didn't. Also you will need to start an new question and post that documentation.

You have to open https://www.playonlinux.com/en/app-801-Microsoft_Office_2010.html and then carefully analyze *Source Code* spoiler part.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
