how do i set grub2 as main boot instead of windows without triggereing the grub rescue?

cn flag

I have installed ubuntu on my external hard drive and grub beside windows boot manager.

but when I unplug the drive, which ubuntu is installed, I get sent directly into the grub2 rescue command, instead of the boot selection menu. I know that this is expected because grub cannot find the ubuntu bootloader.

but Is there a way to trigger the grub2 boot menu Without installing Ubuntu or something similar? Because I like the customization of the grub2.

How do I install grub2 on my internal drive without installing ubuntu and enter grub rescue when rebooting.

Read `man grub2-install` or https://www.linux.org/docs/man8/grub2-install.html

You can add an ESP with gparted on the external drive as FAT32, 100 to 500MB with esp, boot flags. Then reinstall grub to external drive with Boot-Repair's advanced mode. Ubuntu Ubiquity installer only installs to first drive, often Windows drive. Once grub installed to external, you can reset boot order to have external first, then if not found and Windows is second in boot order it will work. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1396379 & https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair & https://sourceforge.net/p/boot-repair/home/Home/ Grub only boots working Windows.

Because whenever i unplug the harddrive, i end up in grub rescue, every time, and I don't want that, I want to be in grub boot menu without the Ubuntu installed drive mounted on my PC, (or just go straight to windows)

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
