Secondary monitor detected but not displaying (20.04)

us flag

I recently switched to Ubuntu 20.04 from windows 10 on my laptop. I often use an additional monitor connected via HDMI, which worked perfectly on Windows. My laptop is a HP Envy with an intel core i7 (with integrated graphics) and also an Nvidia GeForce MX300 dedicated GPU.

When I plug in my second monitor via HDMI a few things happen. To start with, everything seizes up for a second, and ubuntu produces a crash report. From what I can tell, this is related to Gnome (see image below). Secondly, the monitor turns on, but then shuts down after telling me it is receiving no input. I can also see that the monitor has clearly been detected by the system (see image), however when I try to apply and settings changes to the display, I am met with the warning: "Changes cannot be applied: this could be due to hardware limitations".

Additionally, when the secondary monitor is plugged in, if I move my mouse cursor to the (right hand) side of the screen, it vanishes, as if it were part of a joint display and was moving on to the second monitor.

See below for terminal output of xrandr

Is anybody able to assist with this, a second monitor is essential for my line of work. I'm happy to provide any required information which might help get this fixed.

Have you tried using a different hdmi cable? Quite a few people report this kind of issue with a defective cable … although if it was working fine on windows but not on Ubuntu it’s unlikely.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
