Cannot set a higher resolution on primary VGA display

vn flag

Please refer to: Unable to set my screen resolution higher

I have the same problem; the primary (and only) screen can run @ 1920x1080 but system says @ 1024x768 max.

CPU: Intel Core 2 DUO E7500 (please don't laugh!) GPU: Intel G33 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 10), OS: Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, xrandr shows screen 0 is 'VGA1'

The answer given is: sudo xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync and sudo xrandr --addmode VGA1 "1920x1080_60.00"

This works, in that it allows Settings > Display to offer a 1920x1080 option, however 'Apply' blanks the screen, requiring reboot. I must be 2/3 the way there, but am obviously missing something. Relative newbie here. Any help greatly appreciated!

The maximum resolution depends not only on the monitor you have, but also on the video card you have. Run `lspci | grep Graphics` and modify your question by adding the details of your card.

Thanks To Do! I have added the info to the post. Interestingly, the most recent reboot has fixed the problem; all the possible resolutions of the monitor have now (finally) been recognised.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
