Burning .mp4 to a DVD

tv flag

Using Kubuntu 21.10, I have been trying to burn a DVD containing three videos I've received from YouTube-dl. One of them is type .mkv and the other two are .mp3. Using Brasero, I have selected the three files to burn to the disc, but only the .mkv file appears in the list of files to be copied. I receive a dialog box stating that the .mp4 files do not have a "suitable type for video projects".

I have burned .mp4 files to DVDs in the past, but apparently, that is no longer an acceptable type, at least not using Brasero. I tried xfburn, but while that claims to work with CDs and DVDs, it does not. I also tried Burner, but all that did was lock up the computer.

Do you have any suggestions?

My guess is that it's an incompatible codec. Have you looked into `ffmpeg`? It's a very powerful command-line tool very good at converting media files into different formats.

did you download the codecs? `sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras`

You need to understand the difference between a DVD-Video and a DVD-ROM, first of all. While the former has a strict format standard which by the way does NOT accept any of the files you want to burn directly, the latter is a storage device like any other where you can burn any file type or size, same as a CD-ROM. Making a DVD-Video regardless of the obvious considerations of doing that in 2021, almost 2022, generally CAN'T be done with a optical burner software alone, unless said software has conversion features.

Brasero is asking me to "manually install avenc-mp2, avenc-ac3, and avenc-mpeg2video. How can I manually install them? I'm unfamiliar with Terminal procedures.

@Nmath: I have just used ffmpeg to change the mp4 files to webm ones. Now they will load into Brasero, but I still cannot burn the DVD. I got the error message that some codeces are missing. I tried to install the restricted-extras, as 24601 suggested, and Terminal was expecting a response after reading the required readings. Nothing I did after that worked. The computer might have been locked up, but with the Terminal open, I couldn't tell for sure.

@ChanganAuto: Thanks for the information. That certainly clarified the mystery for me.

What is the purpose of having those files in DVD? Just for storage or are you expecting it to play in a standalone DVD Player connected to a TV? If just for storage use DVD-ROM (Data DVD).

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
