NVIDIA GM206 card and USB DAC Not recognized

us flag

My graphics card is listed as llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.0, 256 bits), instead of the NVIDIA card I have.

I'm using Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS.

I tried shutting down, unplugging the computer and rebooting, as this can sometimes fix weird stuff. I did also recently update, if anyone else is having this issue.

I changed the Secure Boot status to disabled, and that did not fix the issue. The problem started when I closed a game in Steam Proton, so I doubt BIOS is an issue (I'm not sure how BIOS change settings when OS running).

when running

sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall

I got a warning

WARNING:root:_pkg_get_support nvidia-driver-390: package has invalid Support Legacyheader, cannot determine support level

It then went through a run with no errors, or other warnings, it also installed an llvm pipeline

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:

libllvm10 libllvm11 libllvm11:i386 shim

and nothing to do with Nvidia. At the same time, the only sound option that became avaliable is “Dummy Output” and the sound will not go to my my Steinberg CL1 DAC.

Which Nvidia card? Have you installed Nvidia drivers and disabled Secure Boot (UEFI)?

"I'm not sure..." is a troubling reply in itself. And why are you posting sound card related stuff? Please run `lspci`, find the line that identifies your graphics card (it can be more than one with hybrid graphics, the integrated GPU and the discrete GPU, we need only the Nvidia's) then [edit] the question and post that information. Meanwhile open UEFI ("BIOS") settings and make sure Secure Boot is disabled.

Yes and no. Yes, there's a sound chip (or die) in every modern graphics card and it's that one that handles HDMI. No, there's no point in checking other related audio stuff when clearly the graphic card itself isn't working as it should. That said, AGAIN, please [edit] your question and add only the relevant part about "NVIDIA" and the Secure Boot status (for the 3rd time!) Don't post requested information in comments!

Not BIOS, **UEFI**! And Secure Boot prevents loading unsigned drivers like Nvidia's. BTW, AGAIN, **did you install Nvidia drivers?** Now that you disabled SE, open Additional Drivers, select and apply the recommended driver version. Reboot. Or run `sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall` and reboot. That certainly you get you card recognized. You can use other sound outputs as long as you explicitly select the one you want. That however has absolutely nothing to do with your question.

UEFI ("BIOS") is accessible by pressing a certain key at boot time. If you actually disabled Secure Boot than you had to open UEFI settings.

What was the result of "autoinstall". AGAIN, [edit] the question. This ISN'T a forum!

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
