Chrome/ium browsers render ghost content on Wayland + Nvidia 470 driver

cn flag

Despite attempts to fiddle with some of the browser flags (like gpu blocklist) all Chromium based browsers (including Brave) seem to render no visible content. But the content is really there and I can even interact with it, knowing where to click...

It just appears all white or black depending on the dark or light Window theme chosen.

I've searched on the interwebz to find a solution but found only very few others that seem to have run into this. Only one Manjaro forum discussion mentions Chrome here https://forum.manjaro.org/t/nvidia-470-wayland-desktop-issues-with-specific-applications/73734 (the OP reports later that Chrome started working on Manjaro, but does not mention how/why) and a bug report on github at the Signal app repository but I'm not sure if that uses the same rendering engine as Chromium though...

Is anyone else seeing this issue on Ubuntu or am I really the only one?

  • Ubuntu 21.10
  • Nvidia driver 470.86
  • Gnome 40.4.0
  • Chrome browser 96.0.4664.110

Wayland and Nvidia are not ready for prime time. Switch back to X11/xorg at your login screen.

Most people don’t grasp that asking a lot of questions unlocks learning and improves interpersonal bonding. In Alison’s studies, for example, though people could accurately recall how many questions had been asked in their conversations, they didn’t intuit the link between questions and liking. Across four studies, in which participants were engaged in conversations themselves or read transcripts of others’ conversations, people tended not to realize that question asking would influence—or had influenced—the level of amity between the conversationalists.
